We love the challenge of writing for food packaging. With limited space, every word counts. Plus it’s immensely satisfying to glimpse your work when browsing the aisles of the local supermarket. We were intrigued when we heard about Bacon Jam, an unusual condiment containing maple syrup, coffee and bourbon as well as the titular bacon. Together Design were commissioned to create the branding, and they invited us on board to help bring it to life with words.

Bacon Jam is the creation of E17, visionary local grocers in Walthamstow. With an authentic back story and a thoroughly moreish flavour, it clearly had potential. We found our tonal inspiration in its east London origins and lip-smacking meatiness, developing a raft of messages to give it some attitude and charm, and communicate its unique story, flavour and versatility.

With the original recipe selling like the proverbial hot cakes, Eat17 soon expanded the line-up to encompass six recipes, each with its own distinctive flavour, as detailed in our tasty little descriptors.

The product launched to great success, helping Bacon Jam gather reams of press coverage and secure a coveted place on the shelves of Tesco, Waitrose and Selfridges. To cap it all, our work gobbled up a Gold award at the Design Effectiveness Awards.
